In 2004 in Germany, around 25 million tonnes of wheat were harvested in an overall cereals crop of 51 million tonnes. Within the EU-25 in the same year, a total of 125 million tonnes of wheat were harvested. The total cereal harvest reached 283 million tonnes. In the EU and Germany, there is substantially more wheat harvested than is consumed, so that this commodity is available either as goods for export or as raw material for bioethanol production.
In addition, it is possible to plant wheat for bioethanol production as a regenerative raw material on set aside land. Studies confirm that in the long term, expansion of the use of biofuels will only be possible with the use of bioethanol.
