Ethyl Acetate

Ethyl acetate is a solvent which can be used for various industries. For instance, for coatings, adhesives, pharma, cosmetics, food and beverages and flexible packaging.

There are different ways of producing ethyl acetate. The most common one is an esterification of alcohol and acetic acid.

CropEnergies decided to use a different production route which leads to a leaner production process where the use of acetic acid can be avoided (see technology) and therefore a lower carbon footprint can be achieved.

Your Benefits

The features

Significant CO2 reduction

  • CO2 savings of around 50 %
  • Up to 130 % CO2 savings, taking into account biogenic carbon uptake
  • Production with renewable energy
  • Lean production process without acetic acid reduces product carbon footprint (PCF)

100 % bio-based

  • We produce our raw material bioethanol from agricultural raw materials
  • Our molecule is free of any fossil components
  • Detectable at any time using the C-14 method

Drop-In solution

  • Standard market performance
  • Identical odour, no visual, physical-chemical difference
  • Can be used in existing machines and production processes without adapting the recipe

European production

  • 80 % of our agricultural raw materials are sourced from within a 200 km radius of the production plant, with the remainder from the EU-27
  • Supply chain security through reduced dependence on fragile supply chains
  • Fast and flexible delivery as well as improved customer service and proximity

Certificates

Sustainability

  • Aiming for standard sustainability certifications and PCF calculations

Quality

  • Food Contact
  • Pharmacopoeia (eg. Ph. Eur.)
  • Kosher
  • Halal
  • Further certificates on request

β€œAt CropEnergies, we are committed to advancing the bioeconomy through our biorefineries and investments in renewable solutions. We are investing up to EUR 165 million in our new plant in Elsteraue, where we will produce renewable ethyl acetate from 2027 onwards and offer the chemical industry a scalable biobased alternative. To accelerate the transition towards a sustainable industry, such investments need a reliable political framework and strong policy support for renewable carbon.”
