Rethink Carbon - For a Strong Bioeconomy

Rethink Carbon is our approach to reshaping carbon in line with the principles of bioeconomy. It combines industrial value creation with sustainable production based on renewable resources. Our world depends on carbon, particularly as a feedstock for the chemical industry. The central challenge is to shift the resource base from fossil sources to renewable carbon. This transition requires action and commitment from society, industry, and policymakers.

At EU-policy level, the bioeconomy is actively promoted through initiatives such as the Clean Industrial Deal, the Bioeconomy Strategy, or the Industrial Accelerator Act. We actively contribute to these debates and advocate for:

  • Strengthening biorefineries as key strategic infrastructure in Europe
  • Promoting domestic investments, jobs and income with EU-grown biomass
  • Expanding the use of renewable carbon across industrial value chains
  • Recognizing crop-based biomass as a strategic asset
  • Establishing fair regulatory frameworks for biobased feedstocks
  • Ensuring closer alignment between agricultural and industrial policy

β€œAt CropEnergies, we are committed to advancing the bioeconomy through our biorefineries and investments in renewable solutions. We are investing up to EUR 165 million in our new plant in Elsteraue, where we will produce renewable ethyl acetate from 2027 onwards and offer the chemical industry a scalable biobased alternative. To accelerate the transition towards a sustainable industry, such investments need a reliable political framework and strong policy support for renewable carbon.”
